I can change the area (country) code but am still unable to play PAL DVDs. Is there supposed to be some acknowledgement in between the sets of '0000' '0000'? Or, are those the passwords I should be using in order to change the country code? I feel much better now knowing that it wasn't just my failure so much as a model / firmware thing. Mine was manufactured in October so it's very possible I'm running different firmware than those comments. I still have a region-free DVD player, it just sucks as my old Philips player was DVD region-free out of the box.
