I bought a small netbook, an, to use as the maintenance machine on my '08 Rabbit. I also purchased a cheap to test everything with VCDS-Lite before fully investing in the full software. Firstly, the computer can't locate drivers when it looks for them online and while I Google searched and found a driver on Mediafire that looked promising, it didn't help. I navigated to the folder of the driver and the Hardware Manager found nothing to install. I tried an exe install and it the system made the 'hardware connected' sound three times in rapid succession so I uninstalled the USB 2.0-Serial driver. I went ahead and decided to try to test the interface despite all these issues and when I connect to the car (on, not running) and press test the application hangs. I left the netbook in the car for 10 minutes and ended up having to end the process.

I am testing through COM3 as COM1, 2, & 4 all return errors 'Port does not exist! Interface: Not found!' So, I looked under 'Device Manager' and found that my only listed COM port is COM3 and it's assigned to Bluetooth. How can I properly install the driver or reassign COM3 to USB? I downloaded the full VCDS and tried it without activation (shareware mode) and there is a USB option but that returns a similar error 'Ross Tech USB Interface Not Found!

USB Library Version 03.01.19' and upon the 'full' VCDS installation it installed all the drivers it needed, I'm dumbfounded. I've already spent $240 on the netbook (which I will have other uses for whether this works out or not) but I don't want to spend another 250 on the Ross-Tech cable/activation if it isn't going to work on this computer.

The two links in the first paragraph are the exact product pages I clicked 'Purchase' on. The computer I ultimately selected from one of the available sellers but it's that computer.

I had to buy the laptop because I use OS X and I don't own a MacBook. Any suggestions would be great.

I would really appreciate where I can get the required drivers or the Ross-Tech USB Interface that isn't found (I'll try uninstalling and reinstalling) in the mean time. Update: It turns out I bought a K-Line cable rather than a CAN cable. Will I still run into these errors even with the proper cable? I bought mine used for 150. People sell them all the time on the vortex. Also if your netbook has windows 8 and it's intel based with usb3.0 ports the rosstech cable will not work until you enter the BIOS and disable the usb 3.0 controller.I did not know this, though it probably would have been the first thing I tried if I was having an issue. Not surprised really, I run into a lot of USB 3 issues in my field.

I had a clients iPod Nano get corrupted because it was plugged into a USB 3 port. As far as buying used, there is one Caveat. The cable is only registered to the original owner. This won't prevent you from using it, however if you ever need to get support from Ross-Tech you won't be able to. The cable you purchased says right in the title you need vag-com 409. Which is version 4.09. This may also mean that cable is hacked and can only use hacked software.

Same thing happened to me when I tried running vcds shareware version on my cable which is not from Ross tech. Then I just used the supplied version, which is 7.xx and it worked fine on my laptop. I did however need the 64 bit drivers from vcds. Also had to use compatibility mode. Another thing, will a basic obd2 plug work with our cars since they use can-bus?
